Crime On August 14, 2011, during an attempted robbery, a man shot John Winston IV twice, leaving him to die in a Richmond, VA parking lot.
Evidence A plastic bag of painkillers was recovered at the crime scene.
DNA Virginia's Department of Forensic Science developed DNA mixture data from the outside of the bag.
Match The lab's manual analysis did not generate a match statistic.
TrueAllele On the same DNA data, the computer's statistic connecting the bag with Otis Madison was 1.2 billion.
Cybergenetics    On October 29, 2012, Dr. Mark Perlin testified at the trial about the computer's DNA match statistic in this case.
Outcome Otis Madison was convicted of first-degree murder and a related firearm charge. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
