Nigerian man rapes student in Oakland

Crime On September 12, 2010, a University of Pittsburgh student, 20, was threatened and raped in her Oakland apartment.
Evidence The perpetrator left a saliva stain on the victim’s underwear.
DNA The Allegheny County crime lab developed DNA data from the underwear.
Match The lab's manual analysis found a match statistic of 18 million between the underwear and the suspect.
TrueAllele On the same data, the computer's statistic connecting the underwear with Mr. Akan was 1.35 quadrillion.
Cybergenetics    On April 2, 2012, Dr. Mark Perlin testified at the Akan trial in Pittsburgh about the DNA match statistics in this case.
Outcome Akaninyene Akan was convicted of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and other charges. On June 26, Akan was sentenced to 32 to 60 years in prison. On January 23, 2013, the appellate court affirmed.
